Trying to find a host family and want to stand out? Check out this post for 7 Au pair profile tips to help you stand out online!
As someone who spoke to several host families prior to being an Au pair, there were a lot of things about my profile that helped me stand out. For one thing, I’m a native English speaker and many families in Germany love that. It would enable me to speak English to the kids when I took care of them or read books to them in English they wouldn’t read otherwise. Either way, this alone helped me to attract families more than I thought it would.
So, if you’ve made an Au pair profile online and you’re looking to attract families, you’ve come to the right place. This post alone highlights 7 Au pair profile tips to help you stand out online as well as how to best implement them.

Upload Photos of Yourself with Children (au pair profile tips)
One Au pair profile tip I would highly recommend other Au pairs do is to upload photos of yourself with children. Personally, families do take note of the type of children you’re with in your pictures and it gives them a sense of ease knowing that you’re not lying about your childcare experience.
Photos I Uploaded
Here are some photos I took with children that I uploaded to my profile. Each one tells a different story about my childcare experience and the children I took care of at the time.
So, if your goal is to be an Au pair for older kids, upload some photos of yourself with children around that age range. The same also goes for younger children as well if your goal is to stand out to families.
Translate Your Profile in Your Target Country’s Language (au pair profile tips)
Another Au pair profile tip I would highly recommend to other Au pairs is to translate your profile in your target country’s language. I, for one, did this on my Au pair profile and I definitely got some positive reactions. Now of course, if you’re not fluent in your target country’s language then there’s obviously going to be some mistakes in your profile. For example, when I wrote my “Dear Host Family letter” in German, I didn’t know the first word after the salutation shouldn’t be capitalized. One host family noticed that mistake but you know what… that’s okay! As long as there’s a version in your native language and one in your target country’s language then you should be fine.
List any First Aid or Certifications You Might Have (au pair profile tips)
Another Au pair profile tip I would highly recommend to other Au pairs is to list any first aid or certifications you might have. Personally, I wish I would’ve done this when I was looking for a host family because it definitely would’ve helped in the long run. For example, being certified in First Aid would mean I was well-equipped to take care of my host kids if they ever got hurt. Being certified in CPR is also a plus if drowning were to ever occur while my host kids were on my watch. All in all to say that the more certifications you have the better. In fact, it’s never too late to sign up for a Standard First Aid + CPR Course yourself if being certified is truly important to you.
Include Your Motivational Letter as a Reference (au pair profile tips)
Another Au pair profile tip I would highly recommend to other Au pairs is to include your motivational letter as a reference. Personally, I wish I would’ve done this when I was looking for a host family because host families may ask you about your motivation when you write to them. Their reason for asking usually stems from curiosity but if you’re going to be living with them for a year then they need to know what will motivate you to stay. In my motivational letter, I talked about my blog, Travel and Blossom, and how it was my main reason for being an Au pair. I wanted to talk about my Au pair experience with my audience while also writing about Germany’s language and culture. So, if you have a motivational letter written, I highly recommend including it in your profile as a reference so that you can stand out to families.
Highlight What Makes You Unique (au pair profile tips)
Another Au pair profile tip I would highly recommend to other Au pairs is to highlight what makes you unique. Personally, I had no problem talking about the fact that I had a blog, Travel and Blossom, on my profile because it gave families the opportunity to visit the blog for themselves. By reading through it, they were able to learn even more about me and what I like to do. So, if you have a YouTube channel or a TikTok presence, don’t be afraid to showcase it. The right family will admire how passionate you are about what you do and it’ll help you stand out more to them as well.
Share An Official Language Certificate for Your Host Country’s Language (au pair profile tips)
Another Au pair profile tip I would highly recommend to other Au pairs is to share an official language certificate you might have in your host country’s language. Personally, I had an A1 certificate before applying to become an Au pair in Germany and it definitely benefited me when it came time to find a family. A lot of families in Germany are typically hoping their prospective Au pair has some knowledge of German so sharing an official language certificate solidifies that for you. In fact, the more German you know as a prospective Au pair, the better.
Upload A Video of Yourself (au pair profile tips)
Lastly, another Au pair profile tip I would highly recommend to other Au pairs is to upload a video of yourself to your profile. Personally, I did not do this when I was looking for a host family but I wish I did. Videos, in my opinion, help you showcase your personality more to your prospective host family so that they can have an idea of what it’s like to meet you before they interview you online. Plus, having a video helps confirm you are who you say you are instead of someone on the internet trying to catfish people. So, if you’re looking for ways to enhance your Au pair profile, uploading a video of yourself is the way to go. Doing this will help you stand out from other Au pairs you may be competing with so that you can get the family of your dreams in the end.
Overall, I really hope you enjoyed reading this post on the 7 Au pair profile tips you need to help you stand out online. Please let me know in the comments down below which tip you’d like to implement the most. I’d love to hear from you! 🙂
